scottish Highland dance

Scottish Highland Dancing is the traditional dancing of Scotland.  Each dance has a tale behind it - the origins of which are hundreds of years old.

The dances were used to keep soldiers in shape for battle - creating and maintaing great stamina and endurance.  When dancing a 6-step Highland Fling, dancers jump 192 times, all the while being expected to display precise, intricate footwork.  Highland dancers have highly developed fast-twitch muscle, and burn more calories in one half hour of dance than a 170 lbs. man would in an hour of soccer.

To become a skilled Premier dancer, one must be willing to devote hours to practice and training.  Only after many years of repetiton and hard work, will a dancer master the techniques needed to have competitive success.

Highland dance is a sport that was once dominated by men, but now is mostly comprised of women.  For every 1 male dancer, there are easily 100 female dancers.

Today, you can find Highland Dance across the world - from Scotland, Australia and Canada to the United States and Japan.
